"Disturbing the Peace"—Spring Class at Hugo House

James Baldwin said in an interview, “Artists are here to disturb the peace.” This class will focus on generating new poems through the study of the intersection of poetry and politics. Our focus will be historical (Virgil, Shelley) as well as contemporary (Raul Zurita, Claudia Rankine, many others). Week-to-week, we’ll complete in-class readings and exercises that model a poetics of engagement and dissent.
